Flo(&)S
A Space for Flora and Subsoil
In the enchanting setting of Colle di Ranica, Flo(&)s was born— a space designed to rediscover the hidden richness of flora and subsoil. This project, conceived by Architect Patrizia Berera and promoted by the municipal council, entrusted me with the task of creating an educational panel, a piece that would tell the story of the various plant species that populate the area with simplicity and beauty.
The project envisioned the creation of interactive spaces, true open-air laboratories where nature itself becomes the protagonist. We at Modulor were commissioned to handle the creation of the furnishings, project supervision, and internal illustration. The panel, which encapsulates our efforts, represents a journey through three types of flora: trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants.
At the top of the panel, an altimetric profile traces the outline of Colle di Ranica down to the Serio River, revealing how flora is distributed in harmony with altitude. Each species finds its ideal habitat: some prefer hilly areas, others take root at the foot of the hill or near the river.
Trees and shrubs are elegantly represented through silhouettes that evoke their form, while the foreground in color celebrates the beauty of the details: leaves, flowers, and fruits are offered to the observer’s eye, inviting them to recognize and appreciate the different species.
The three details are arranged in a natural order, almost suggesting a path: at the top, the crowns of the trees tower, in the middle, shrubs make their way, and at the bottom, flowers and herbaceous plants rest on the ground. This illustration, the result of careful and passionate synthesis, was then transferred onto three adhesive sheets, expertly applied by the Sommariva company to the final panel.
Alongside the elements, small wooden boxes were created to provide a tactile communication experience accessible to all. Inside, depending on the season, one can find flowers, leaves, or fruits to interact with. This allows for the perception of texture, scent, and the fragility or softness of the blooms, which can then be more easily recognized during a walk on the hill.
Below are images of the final result. For those who wish to explore the project and its origins in greater depth, more information is available at this link.
