A New Way to Experience Sunlight
Imagine a completely new way to interact with sunlight, to perceive it differently. Just step outside of Italy to see how our neighbors live with large windows, often without any sun protection. It's true, the Italian sun is more intense and warm, but what if we took inspiration from Islamic countries, where light is filtered and modulated through traditional structures like Mashrabiya? These decorative lattices, with their depth and thickness, not only shield from direct sunlight but also cool the interiors, creating a play of shadows that dances with the light.
The geometric and decorative textures of the Mashrabiya guide and shape the light, casting sinuous shadows that follow the intricate patterns of the latticework. In this interplay of light and shadow, an intimate relationship with the sun is formed—one that doesn’t completely obscure the light, but modulates it in a way that respects the natural rhythms of day and night. This approach allows for harmonious living with sunlight, respecting our natural cycles of sleep and wakefulness.
The project materializes in a series of innovative shutters, available in various types: with hinged or sliding openings. The material chosen for these creations is Kevlar®, a synthetic polymer fiber that is exceptionally strong, offering superior protection compared to steel and unmatched heat resistance. This composite material, both lightweight and flexible, is made of reinforcing fiber and resin, qualities that make it ideal for the windows of future homes. With Kevlar®, shutters are no longer just a protective element, but become design tools that enrich the interaction with light, reinterpreting ancient architectural traditions in a modern key.
